NW 2-8-8-2 #2028 - Norfolk & Western
Description:
The crew members hanging out of the engineer's window are dwarfed by the mass of steel comprising the locomotive. Alco-Schenectady built this massive 2-8-8-2 Chesepeake type steam locomotive in May of 1919 as Norfolk & Western #2028 (serial #61096, class Y-3a). Many of this class were sold to other railroads during WW II but #2028 stayed with the N&W its entire life. After 39 years of heavy hauling, the massive loco met up with the scrapper's torch in February of 1958. it would have made one HUGE pile of scrap steel! Specs - 58" drivers, super impressive 270 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" high pressure cylinders, 39x32" low pressure cylinders, massive engine wt of 539,000 lb and equally massive tractive force of 114,154 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo so an approximate date and location were used to post the photo.
